The determination and distribution of heavy metals (Lead, Nickel, Manganese, Copper and Iron) wer... more The determination and distribution of heavy metals (Lead, Nickel, Manganese, Copper and Iron) were investigated in water, sediment and tissues of crab (Callinectus latimanus) from New Calabar River in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Sampling was done by Standard methods while analyses were done using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (FAAS), with Perkin-Elmer 3110. The various wavelengths used were Cu =324.8nm, Pb = 283.3nm, Fe = 248.3nm, Ni = 232.0nm, and Mn = 279nm. Iron was much more accumulated than all other trace metals with a concentration that ranged from 1,574.0-1,645.0 µg/g. Heavy metal level was higher in male than female crab. Similarly, Iron in sediments showed the highest with the mean values ranging from 41,880.0-86,543.3µg/g; in water it varied from (0.67-3.58 mg/l) and were higher than 0.3mg/l WHO standard and 1.0mg/l FEPA standard for drinking water respectively. Results obtained revealed that sediments from New Calabar River concentrate metals from the water and sediment surfaces and release the metals to the food chain through the crab. Ca
