Born Orville Burrell in Kingston, Jamaica, on October 22, 1968, Shaggy earned his nickname from the animated Saturday morning show, Scooby Doo. Scooby’s sidekick, “Shaggy,” was the ever-hungry hippie on the show, and his friends thought it fitting for Burrell because of his unruly shock of hair. A cover of the reggae tune “Oh Carolina” in 1993 catapulted Shaggy to international fame, but subsequent success with the Grammy Award-winning album Boombastic in 1995 and multiplatinum Hot Shot in 2000—on which the hit single “It Wasn’t Me” appears—established him as one of reggae’s most popular artists.

The Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Caribbean Studies (ICS) has added Jamaican musician, singer, DJ and actor, Shaggy, into its “Wall of Fame.”
ICS on Monday noted that Shaggy, whose real name is Orville Richard Burrell, scored hits with the songs “Oh Carolina,” “Boombastic,” “In The Summertime,” “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel.”
Shaggy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1988 and obtained the military occupational specialty (MOS) of 0811 (Field Artillery Cannon Crewman).
ICS said he served with a Field Artillery Battery in the 10th Marine Regiment during the Persian Gulf War.
“The highest rank he achieved was lance corporal, although he was reduced in rank twice,” ICS said. “Shaggy perfected his signature singing voice while he was in the Marine Corps.”
ICS said Shaggy, who took his stage name from the character Shaggy, from the TV show Scooby-Doo.
